There are many tangible and intangible benefits of being an employee of the Chicago Zoological Society.
Regular full-time non-union positions:
- Merit-based annual wage increases for non-union positions
- Four personal days per year
- Eight paid holidays per year (including your birthday!)

- Cafeteria-style Benefits: Employees design their own benefits package each year by selecting from a long menu of benefit options. Each employee receives benefit “credits” (benefit dollars) to purchase benefits. Any unspent benefit credits may be converted to supplemental pay, a 401(k) plan contribution (if eligible) and/or a contribution to a pre-tax Flexible Spending Account to cover eligible out-of-pocket healthcare and/or dependent care expenses.
- Flexible Spending Accounts: Employees may redirect a portion of their wages to a pre-tax account to cover eligible out-of-pocket healthcare and/or dependent care expenses
- Employee Assistance Program: Free, confidential problem assessment, assistance, and referrals for employees and their immediate family members to deal with issues such as stress, depression, financial, marital, or family problems, drug or alcohol problems, etc.

- Wage increases as stipulated in the union contract
- Ten paid holidays (including your birthday!)
- Two personal days per year
- Medical, dental, life and AD&D insurance, employee assistance program, and short-term disability benefits provided through Teamsters Local 727 Health & Welfare Benefits Plan at no cost.
- Long-Term Disability insurance at no cost
- Retiree medical and dental coverage for staff with at least 15 years of service at age 62. Retiree coverage ends once Medicare eligible.
In addition, for all benefit-eligible positions:
- Paid Vacation
- Ten paid sick days per year
- Bi-weekly pay days (every other Friday)
- 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan with employer match – 50 cents on the dollar up to 5-1/2% of pre-tax and/or Roth deferrals

- CZS University: Employees may participate at no cost in a variety of classes offered on-site through CZS University. Classes cover a wide range of topics including professional development, skill-building classes, conservation-related topics, basic operations, and special interest topics. Instructors include guest lecturers, staff presenters, and formal trainers.
