Hours after his birth on Feb. 14, 2012, Animal Programs staff became concerned about a male black-footed cat’s well-being because his 4-year-old mother, Cleo, appeared not to be providing proper maternal care. The kitten was not nursing and his body temperature was alarmingly low. Additionally, he was significantly underweight at birth. Students from the Chicago High School for Agricultural Science enjoyed a unique "Shadow Opportunity" at Brookfield Zoo.This is the third annual Shadow Opportunity for juniors and seniors from CHSAS, who are selected to partner with a Brookfield Zoo crew member who is in a profession of interest to the student.

Brookfield Zoo is the first North American zoo to use revolutionary 3D imaging technology with on-site digital radiology and CT equipment in its state-of-the-art animal hospital. The new technology allows the Society’s veterinarians to enhance two-dimensional CT (CAT) scans, MRIs, and ultrasounds with 3D models that will enable them to better treat zoo animals.

There's a new kid on the Tropic World block and you should swing on by and see him! A male white-cheeked gibbon was born on November 15, 2011, and the 1-month-old infant—along with his mom, Indah; dad, Benny; and 2-year-old brother, Thani—can be seen on exhibit in the zoo’s Tropic World: Asia exhibit daily between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The zoo’s Grounds Department is constantly trimming trees and providing browse for the animals. However, at Brookfield Zoo there is no such thing as too much browse, and now—thanks to ComEd—more animals are enjoying an endless supply. Each week, ComEd makes two deliveries of 20 to 25 cubic yards of browse per truckload...

Staff from the Chicago Zoological Society (including CZS President and CEO Stuart Strahl), Lincoln Park Zoo, the United States Post Office, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and students from Chicago Latin School gathered in Lincoln Park Zoo’s Kovler Lion House on Tuesday, Sept. 20, for the unveiling of the new Save Vanishing Species Semipostal stamp.

Not one, not two, but three female addax calves have been born at Brookfield Zoo within the last two months, and one more is expected by the end of the summer. The most recent was born this past Saturday, July 9. The other two were born on May 30 and June 1. All are doing well and can be seen with their mothers—Martha, Sara, and Mali—on exhibit in their outdoor habitat on the north side of the zoo.

Polar Bears International (PBI) presented its prestigious “Champion for Polar Bears” award to the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) on Saturday, May 7, recognizing the Society for its acclaimed climate awareness programs and polar bear initiatives at Brookfield Zoo. At the same time, American Airlines received the “Paw of Approval” award for its collaboration with CZS in advancing conservation efforts throughout the world...

CZS is leading a collaboration of zoological, education, science, and research specialists in developing plans for a national Climate Literacy Zoo Education Network (CliZEN). The initiative, which is the first of its kind for zoos, will explore new approaches to science education by connecting zoo and aquarium visitors to polar animals—including polar bears—whose lives are threatened by climate change.

Students in grades 5th through 12th from six Chicago Public Schools (CPS) participated in the 2nd annual Chicago Zoological Society science fair held February 25 at Brookfield Zoo.
