Endangered Wolf Leaving Brookfield Zoo to Enter the Wild

With only 58 Mexican gray wolves living in the wild in New Mexico and Arizona, a 4½-year-old female Mexican gray wolf is leaving Brookfield Zoo to prepare to enter the wild. The release to the wild would help bolster the population of this endangered species. On October 27, the wolf, Ernesta, will relocate to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) Sevilleta Wolf Management Facility near Socorro, NM. Once Ernesta arrives at this facility, she will receive survival skills conditioning through a prerelease “boot camp” to prepare for life in the wild.  more...

Guests Can Meet Pepe Penguin

Guests visiting Brookfield Zoo’s The Living Coast may have the pleasure of seeing Pepe, a Humboldt penguin who hatched on March 13, waddling along the exhibit’s walkway as an ambassador for his species. On days when the exhibit is not too crowded, zookeepers bring Pepe, now 5-months-old, out to meet the public. They answer questions and share facts about Humboldt penguins as well as some important conservation work taking place in the birds' native country of Peru.  more...

Aardvark Born at Brookfield Zoo

Brookfield Zoo is happy to announce the birth of an aardvark on January 12. And, because of the dedicated care provided by the Society’s zookeepers, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and nutritionist, the now healthy 13-pound calf has a bright future ahead of it. New 3D Imaging Technology in Animal Hospital

A three-dimensional (3D) view does more than make for exciting movies in a theater, it can also improve the care of animals. The Chicago Zoological Society’s (CZS) Brookfield Zoo is the first North American zoo to use revolutionary 3D imaging technology with on-site digital radiology and CT equipment in its state-of-the-art animal hospital. The new technology allows the Society’s veterinarians to enhance two-dimensional CT (CAT) scans, MRIs, and ultrasounds with 3D models that will enable them to better treat zoo animals.  more...
