Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) needs energetic, enthusiastic, and friendly people to join the Brookfield Zoo seasonal staff!
The zoo is open every day of the year and recruits seasonal employees heaviest during late winter/early spring of each year to prepare for our peak season from Memorial Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. We also recruit during summer, fall, and winter. Seasonal positions are temporary in nature.

Roving Naturalist (Seasonal) The Chicago Zoological Society is looking for energetic, outgoing, motivated individuals with strong communication and people skills and a love of animals to join our team this summer from March 2012 through September 2012 in our Roving Naturalist program. You will interpret live arthropods such as grasshoppers, scorpions, and millipedes in addition to providing engaging interactive interpretation for zoo visitors through presentations, encounters and activities daily throughout the park. By gaining familiarity with a variety of zoo exhibits you will also play the important role of helping visitors have an exciting, educational experience at Brookfield Zoo’s Butterflies! and other exhibits. Candidates must be outgoing, independent, able to work well with little supervision and be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed. Must have completed at least 1 year of college with Environmental Education experience strongly preferred. Valid Illinois driver’s license required. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required. Admissions Attendant (Seasonal)
Admissions Attendants greet and introduce guests to the zoo experience at admission/ticket booths throughout the zoo. Must quickly and efficiently accommodate the guests’ admissions needs, provide information and remain accurate and accountable for all transactions on a cash register system. Excellent communication and people skills required. Some experience interacting with the public desirable. Position requires holiday and weekend work as needed. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required. Salary: $8.25/hour.
Bistro Line Cook (Seasonal)
Initiates all actions necessary to carry out food preparation and presentation as dictated by the orders received by the Chef in the kitchen. Assists the Chef with all production, cleaning and storage of all restaurant and picnic product and equipment. Prepares all food requisitions necessary to prepare all items offered on the menu. Insures that all food is prepared according to standard recipe and presented in a consistent manner. Maintains a physical presence in the kitchen during dining hours. Washes, utensils and equipment to department specifications. Maintain a safe clean work environment. Follows established food service sanitation practices. Minimum 1 year experience working as a line cook in a restaurant environment. Cooking school certificate preferred with food management courses included in the curriculum. Strong customer service and organizational skills. Must be able to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines. Bistro Server (Seasonal)
Obtain food and beverage orders from guests and enter orders into the register system following established protocol. Serve all food and beverages in a timely manner and in accordance with prescribed sanitation rules meeting Health Department regulations. Return frequently to the table to attend to the guests’ needs and ensure quality service. Clear tables and cash out guest checks. Perform opening and closing duties for assigned station. Set-up assigned station with necessary supplies and equipment needed to service the guests, e.g., napkins, serving ware, coffee set-up, condiments, etc., ensuring all serving ware is properly cleaned and spot free. Maintain cleanliness of assigned station, e.g., clean food service equipment, wipe tables, sweep, etc. Arrange tables in assigned station in the proper configuration at the beginning and end of shift. High School graduate or GED equivalent required. Minimum 6 months work experience as a server in a full-service restaurant is preferred. Must be at least 21 years of age. Basic math skills and willingness to learn required. Demonstrated strong customer service skills required and ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines required. Ability to communicate effectively with the public required. Ability to handle multiple tasks required. Must project a neat, clean, professional appearance at all times. Custodian (Janitor) /Matron (Seasonal)
Responsible for performing janitorial type duties in various type buildings throughout the park ensuring a sanitary environment for employees, animal collection and guests and in conformance with operating programs. The majority of these services are provided during business hours, during peak visitation periods in restroom facilities throughout the park. Inspect work areas for safety hazards and report such to shift coordinator. Knowledge of general cleaning equipment such as brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, janitorial materials and media is a plus. Must be at least 16years of age. Must be able to read, write, and perform basic math. Strong communication skills required. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required. Salary: $9.75/hour.
Groundskeeper (Seasonal)
Responsible for performing routine and standard Grounds duties and functions, such as park clean-up, paper picking, lawn mowing, waste removal, mulching, etc. with supervision in order to meet operating needs and in accordance with routine operating procedures. Performs general park cleaning duties as directed by supervisor, including collection of garbage and recyclable materials, grounds clean up, paper picking, and/or washing garbage cans. Properly operates and maintains assigned equipment including lawn mowers, blowers, weed whips, small tractors, pick-up and dump trucks, hand tools, and other equipment as required. Positions with driving responsibility require a valid driver’s license. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required. Starting salary $9.75 per hour.
Prep Cook (Seasonal)
Responsible for the timely preparation of all food items ordered by the Food Service Outlets through the Food Service Commissary. Prepares, assembles and packages food items such as salads, sandwiches, parfaits, and other grab n go items for sale in the Food Service outlets. Cuts produce, breads and cheeses. Assists in cleaning the kitchen and equipment at the end of the day. High school diploma or equivalent training or experience preferred. One year experience as a prep cook in a restaurant or experience in a deli environment is preferred. Strong customer service and organizational skills required. This seasonal position requires the incumbent to work non-standard hours such as evenings, weekends and holidays. The schedule is between 10:00 am and 10:00 p.m. daily. Play Partner (Seasonal)
This position in the Hamill Family Play Zoo provides unique opportunities for children age birth to10 to connect with animals and nature through creative expression, play, and direct contact with plants and live animals. Sets up, disperses, and cleans up materials on a regular basis in indoor and outdoor settings. Provides parents and caregivers with ideas and approaches to help create caring attitudes towards animals and nature and models caring behaviors. Monitors safety of all guests at the Hamill Family Play Zoo. High school diploma required. College degree in education, liberal arts or related field is preferred. Equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. Must be able to work weekends and holidays, as well as evenings. Starting salary $12.25 per hour.
Camp & Specialty Programs Counselor (Seasonal)
Teaches a variety of camp and specialty program topics and themes through techniques including investigation, exploration and instruction. Programs include, but are not limited to: Zoo Camp, Safari Sleepovers, Kid’s Clubs, and Mini Camps. Supervises groups of approximately 5-20 program participants throughout the park during all program activities and zoo tours, maintaining a minimum 1:10 staff to child ratio at all times. Assists program participants with all activities, games, and projects that relate to the designated program theme. Organizes all daily supplies for activities like free play, arts and crafts, snack time, and games. Interacts on a daily basis with program participants and parents and guardians of program participants. Other related duties as assigned. Minimum one year of college or equivalent combination of training and experience required, including coursework in education, biological sciences, communication or other directly related field or subjects, such as public speaking, interpretation, theater, or art and interpretation. Must be at least 18 years of age as required by the American Camp Association Guidelines. Minimum one year experience working with children in a formal or non-formal education setting such as a day care, camp, student teaching, school, park district, or cultural institution, required. Teaching experience in a formal or non-formal education setting is preferred. Supervisory experience is preferred. Ability to work in a team environment required. The work schedule for Zoo Camp is generally Monday – Friday, 7–8 hours per day. The work schedule for Safari Sleepovers is generally overnight from Friday evening into Saturday morning. Incumbents must display a positive attitude and be a positive role model to program participants, providing a fun and positive learning environment for program participants including school-aged children. Work schedules are based on the needs of the operation. Incumbent may be scheduled to work non-standard hours including evenings, holidays, overnights, and weekends. Incumbents for this seasonal position must be available to work a total of 8 out of the 10 weeks of camp and must attend a minimum of 24 hours of pre-camp staff training. Starting pay is $12.25/hr.
Dispatcher/EMT (Seasonal)
This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by responding to calls from employees and guests for emergency and routine assistance assuring a positive and safe guest experience. Coordinates all radio communications for the Police and Life Safety Departments and the Society, in general. Answers incoming calls into the Police Department and dispatches Police units accordingly. Provides emergency medical aid to guests and employees as needed. Operates the communication center for the Police and Life Safety Departments and the Society, in general. Promptly answers calls to the station and dispatches Police units accordingly. Maintains incidents cards for responding units. Provides emergency medical assistance to guests and staff and performs ambulance duty as required. Medical assistance includes, but is not limited to patient transports, extrication, loading and unloading patient onto stretcher and in/out of the ambulance, and CPR/AED to basic life saving under the guidelines set by Loyola Medical Center. Completes required internal and state reports. Contacts and coordinates communications with municipal agencies during emergencies and non-emergencies as necessary. Maintains the Society’s Lost and Found service for guests and staff. Monitor the weather and fire alarm systems and notifies manager of identified issues. Other related duties as assigned. Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent combination of related training and experience required. Minimum 1 to 2 years experience preferred in police/EMS dispatching and guest relations. Emergency Medical Technician certification required; must remain current in Emergency Medical Services continuing education as mandated per licensing requirements. Patrol Officer (Seasonal)
This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by providing services, including asset protection and medical aid, to provide a safe environment for employees and guests, contributing to a positive guest experience and to the Society’s overall financial sustainability. This position functions as an armed Patrol Officer, performing patrol duties to ensure the safety and security of guests, employees, facilities, and animal collection. Assist with traffic direction and general patrol of the park and parking lots and related duties. Follow Society and departmental established safety and procedural rules. Maintain work area and equipment in clean and functional condition. Enforce and administer the enforcement of park rules, regulations, state, federal and local statutes. Prepares field reports and required paperwork in accordance with established department procedures. Direct traffic inside and outside the park as assigned. Food Service Attendants prepare food, operate a cash register, bus tables and serve zoo guests at food locations throughout the zoo. Merchandise Attendant (Seasonal)
Merchandise Attendants sell souvenir and gift items at merchandise locations throughout the zoo. Duties include operating a cash register, cleaning merchandise locations, stocking and pricing merchandise, setting up displays, taking physical inventories and assisting guests with purchases. Must quickly and efficiently accommodate the guests’ merchandise needs and remain accurate and accountable for all transactions on a cash register system. Motor Safari Adventure Guide (Seasonal)
Transports guests on designated routes throughout the park, narrates Motor Safari Tour, operates the Carousel, provides access control function at the Motor Safari stations and Carousel and responds to inquiries. Responsible for developing, learning, and delivering extensive narrated tour materials to zoo guests. Provides assistance to guests as needed. Some physical lifting involved. Marketing Events Assistant (Seasonal)
Responsible for the set-up and breakdown of all Marketing/Special Events at the zoo and provides support for zoo outreach programs in the community and will be Brookfield Zoo ambassadors at weekend festivals and events outside the confines of the park. They will be responsible for such things as the scheduling, transporting, staffing, and upkeep of the zoo's outreach booth as well as learning and delivering a variety of information, materials and activities related to the zoo and animals. Will assist in the event set-up, execution and tear-down including the set up and take down of tables, chairs, and canopies. Sets up craft activities and assists with crafts as necessary. Erects banners and signage for zoo events. Sets up and monitors sound equipment, troubleshooting any problems. Delivers supplies and/or product samples, etc. to designated event areas in the zoo. Escorts entertainment and media within the park and transports equipment. Dresses in costume and escorts costume characters as needed and participates in non-event day activities such as local parades. Requires a High School diploma or equivalent training and experience. Banquet Captain (Seasonal)
Responsible for the execution of all assigned events. Assists in managing staffing levels, equipment needs, room set up, etc. Trains all assigned subordinate staff. Insures that all banquet staff maintain a safe, clean work environment meeting Health Department regulations. Responsible for coordination of all details, logistics, entertainment, catering site arrangements, etc. toward the overall success of all assigned events. Responsible for physical set up of assigned functions. Trains assigned subordinate staff. Inspects assigned function spaces to see that rooms are set up as specified on Banquet Event Orders (BEO). Directs assigned wait staff in proper table placement, table set up, etc. Executes assigned events; meets and greets clients upon arrival, serves as host/zoo representative. Reviews with client the agenda for the event and recommend/make changes as needed for event success. Supervises, coaches, and provides direction to assigned wait staff, enabling them to develop and be successful in their specific functional area of expertise and proficient at serving flawless events. Provides ongoing supervision to maintain standards and procedures. Assists in maintaining cleanliness of departmental storage spaces; recommends and advises need for replacement of inventories of departmental equipment and supplies. Supervises and gives direction for event to assigned wait staff. Checks for proper uniform; conducts roll call. Verifies delivery of all needed supplies. Communicates with Chef throughout event to maintain timely service. Fosters client contacts to help cultivate future events with client’s associates. Trains and evaluates assigned staff on an ongoing basis. Recommends appropriate personnel action. Responds to requests and inquiries, and resolves problems to guest satisfaction. At conclusion of event, inspects all functional areas to ensure cleanliness and completion of tasks. Banquet Server (Seasonal)
Acts as server at food and beverage functions held at the zoo. Assisting with setting up the dining, reception and staging areas for scheduled events by referring to the Banquet Event Order (BEO). Organize bussing station and prepare coffee service, champagne, butter, and bread baskets. Follow safe food handling procedures in accordance with established food service sanitation practices. Requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, outstanding customer service orientation and attention to detail. Ability to maintain 100% customer satisfaction under pressure and with deadlines required. Banquet Set-Up (Seasonal)
Responsible for the set-up and break down of all meetings and banquet events as they are listed on the Banquet Event Order (BEO). Assist all Catered Events staff and zoo staff in the execution of events. High School diploma or equivalent training and experience preferred. One-year banquet/catering experience desired. Requires strong customer service skills and ability to work well with minimal supervision. Must be able to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines. Ability to routinely lift a minimum of 50 pounds required. This seasonal position requires a flexible, creative person who is able to work weekends and evenings as required. Bartender (Seasonal)
Prepare drinks for the wait staff to serve to guests. Prepare bar for daily operation by referring to the Banquet Event Order (BEO). Insure proper quantities of supplies of product are on hand to cover the days needs, including alcohol, juices, water, soda, fruit, lexons, ice, napkins, and glassware. Prepare all drinks to specified recipes. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Bartenders school certificate preferred. Experience as a bartender preferred and strong customer service skills. Demonstrated experience coordinating multiple projects and activities. Must be able to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines. Ability to work independently. Research Assistant (Seasonal)
Research Assistants work closely with full-time staff as part of the Audience Research Department at the zoo. Research projects include understanding different audience needs, exploring guest satisfaction, and assessing special exhibits. Projects will include quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. Research assistants will aid in data collection (mostly outdoors) and data entry, and may help with other aspects of ongoing research projects such as pilot testing new methodologies. Minimum two years relevant college coursework towards a Bachelor’s degree in psychology or other social sciences required. Applicants with strong interpersonal skills, a background in psychology, biology, environmental education, or other social sciences, familiarity with computers and some basic understanding of statistics are preferred. Excellent organizational and communication skills, experience interacting with the public, and experience working on a team are desirable. Spanish fluency a plus. Dishwasher (Seasonal)
This position is required to clean all dishes, glasses, flatware, pots, pans, equipment, etc. for the Catered Events Department. The position is also responsible for the proper cleaning and storage of all service pieces. Washes and scrubs all dishes, flatware, utensils pots, pans and equipment to departmental specifications. Sorts flatware and stores all dishes, glasses flatware and all kitchenware in their proper vessels/storage areas. Takes out trash throughout the day and at the end of the day. Cleanly sweeps and mops the kitchen floor throughout the day and at the end of the day. Helps plate up food when needed. High school diploma or equivalent training or experience preferred. Strong customer service and organizational skills required. Must be prompt and reliable. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required. Lead Membership Representative/Data Entry Clerk (Seasonal)
This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by performing member service functions including responding to member inquiries and concerns via telephone, e-mail and in person, as well as membership data entry and customer service. To support financial sustainability and provide an extraordinary guest experience, this position will ensure that membership applications are processed accurately and efficiently in accordance with departmental standards. Accurately post membership financial gifts (dues) in Raiser’s Edge database by linking gift(s) to member's record and activating the membership with the benefit and premium items that correlate to the chosen levels. Ensure membership expiration dates are consistent with dates of purchase. Enter all related codes used for campaign tracking to the gifts. Balance batch totals and then commit the history batch in the Raiser’s Edge database. Respond to phone inquiries and simultaneously perform accurate and efficient data entry regarding the inquiries, including addressing caller concerns, directing member and non-member questions to the appropriate resources, managing member expectations, seeking resolutions to problems expeditiously and fulfilling member requests. Create and update membership and/or animal adoption records in the Raiser’s Edge database ensuring no prior record exists. Utilize the appropriate process for each type of application. Record relevant information on original paper application for further processing in the Raiser’s Edge database. Troubleshoot and problem-solve discrepancies as needed. Supervise Membership Representative/Data Entry Clerks in the absence of the Supervisor, Membership Operations, addressing all membership or Share the Care issues; providing assistance to members and assisting peers with data entry and customer service questions, effectively resolving or escalating member complaints as appropriate. Following the instructions provided by the Supervisor, Membership Operations, ensure work flow prioritization, and provide a summary report via email of the day’s activities to the Supervisor. Through training, obtain product knowledge of the various memberships and Share the Care packages. Demonstrate effective problem-solving skills to provide guests with essential information to assist them in maximizing their membership and zoo experience. Must become familiar with the zoo and its attractions as well as keep abreast of upcoming special events and enthusiastically and accurately relay information to guests. Membership Data Entry Clerk (Seasonal)
Provides excellent customer service to our members by accurately entering and updating applications, answering phone calls, mail, and in person inquiries, and addressing other member needs. Create and updates membership and/or animal adoption records in Raiser’s Edge database, links the gift to the member’s record, and renews the membership with the benefits and premium items that correlate to the chosen level. Inform, assist, and direct guests as necessary. Prepare and distribute food as directed. Observe assigned animals closely, routinely, and objectively report to supervisor on their behavior, health, and welfare. Observe condition of assigned area(s), animal enclosures, and equipment. Warehouse Stockperson (Seasonal)
Warehouse Stockperson will collate requests, pull and deliver requested stock such as perishable food, resalable merchandise, office supplies and support items requested by restaurants, food and merchandise locations, gift shops and other zoo departments. Drives and operates various warehouse vehicles and equipment such as carts, forklifts, and trucks in order to load and unload shipments. Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid Illinois driver’s license with a good driving record. Must be reliable, neat, highly organized, and accurate and possess excellent customer service skills. Position requires holiday and weekend work. Starting salary $8.90 per hour.
