If you have always dreamed of being a zookeeper, now is your chance! And, you can also, work side by side with zookeepers as they care for penguins or kangaroos. Whether you love birds or snakes, big animals, or little critters--we have a Backstage Adventure just for you.

Get started by choosing the animal you like best or your favorite exhibit. Try one or try them all--the adventures are endless!

Animals of Africa (ages 12+)

Backstage Adventure: Animals of Africa

Help the keepers as they prepare dinner for klipspringers, dwarf mongoose, or giraffe. Deliver enrichment that you helped make to the dwarf mongoose and prepare the night holding area for klipspringers. End your adventure by observing an African painted dog feeding and/or training session. **If we have new dogs and pups we may not be able to accommodate this.

African Painted Dogs (ages 12+)

Backstage Adventure: African Painted Dogs

Participants of the African Painted Dogs Backstage Adventure will be immersed in the daily care of African painted dogs, which includes diet preparation (not for the squeamish!) African painted dogs are the most carnivorous of all carnivores (rabbits, pigs, and raw meat...oh my). You may also help the keepers with yard cleaning, enrichment set-up, training and /or feeding and shifting the animals onto exhibit.

Apes of Asia (ages 12+)

Backstage Adventure: Apes of Asia

Here’s your opportunity to meet some of the hidden and lesser known occupants of Tropic World: Asia. As part of the Asian Adventure, you will assist with the midday food toss to the gibbons; meet mysterious pygmy lorises, which come out only at night; observe an orangutan training session; and watch the Asian small-clawed otters as they get their lunch.

Caring for Camels (ages 12+)

Backstage Adventure: Caring for Camels

Participants of the Caring for Camels Backstage Adventure work directly with morning keepers on exhibit to clean and check the exhibit, weigh out grain, chop produce, help feed and shift the camels between their yards. Participants will be able to feed the camels and in the Spring and early Summer, possibly help groom our herd through a protected barrier.

Flippers and Fins (ages 12+)

Backstage Adventure: Flippers and Fins

In this behind-the-scenes tour of Seven Seas and Pinniped Point, participants will help with marine mammal care sessions and get up close to dolphins, sea lions, gray seals, and harbor seals. Participants will even take part in the 11:30 Dolphins in Action! presentation.

Birds of a feather flock together in our Flying Feathered Friends Backstage Adventure. Learn about the beauty in our skies as you embark on an adventure in the free flight area of our Reptiles and Birds exhibit. Participants will work with zookeepers as they learn about how we care for and train our feathered friends.

It's the Great Ape Escape! Get the chance to work with our gorilla keepers as they get Tropic World’s gorilla exhibit and its inhabitants ready for their day. See the gorillas in their off-exhibit enclosure, learn about the gorillas’ diet, and see where their food is prepared.

The keepers in Feather and Scales will guide you through the fascinating world of frogs, snakes, lizards, turtles, amphibians, and reptiles - a.k.a. the herptiles (“Herps” to their friends.) Backstage Adventure: Junior Zookeeper

Perfect for the young animal lover in your life, Junior Zookeeper is a unique, hands-on experience your child will never forget. See parts of the Hamill Family Play Zoo and Animal Ambassador Embassy that only keepers get to see and meet some of our new Animal Ambassadors. Tamandua, sloth and wallaby are just a few of the animal ambassadors your child may connect during this experience.

Junior Reptile Keeper (ages 8+)

Backstage Adventure: Junior Reptile Keeper

Perfect for the young reptile lover in your life, Junior Reptile Keeper is a unique, hands-on experience your child will never forget. The adventure starts with small lizards and snakes at the Feathers and Scales exhibit, then continues at Reptiles and Birds which is home to the Galapagos tortoises and monitor. The experience concludes at The Swamp where the Orinoco crocodiles and alligator snapping turtle reside. See parts of the exhibits only keepers get to see and meet and feed some of the reptiles that live there. This Backstage Adventure is brand new, so sign up now!

Mole Rats, Meerkats, and More (ages 8+)

Backstage Adventure: Mole Rats, Meerkats, and More

Explore Fragile Kingdom Desert in an exciting new way. This is a one-of-a-kind Backstage Adventure appropriate for young animal lovers. It will bring you nose-to-nose with some of the most interesting and charismatic residents of the desert. Help animal care professionals with mole rat food preparation and help them put food in the habitat. Participants will then observe the mole rats eating while your host explains the differences between the naked mole rat and the Damaraland mole rat. Participants will be able to provide enrichment to the meerkats and to observe the animals interacting with it as care givers interpret the animals’ behaviors. At the end of the experience, participants will be allowed to offer Pilgrim porcupine a favored food item in a protected contact setting. This is an exclusive experience you’ll never forget.

Go behind the scenes of Tropic World: South America to meet these intelligent primates who have a tail they can use as a hand! Feed the anteater and meet tiny callimicos. Before you call it a day, say goodnight to the animals that call Habitat Africa!: The Forest home. You will get a chance to feed the storks and hornbills, help prepare afternoon meals, provide enrichment for the okapi, duikers, red river hogs and elephant shrews all while preparing the animals’ accommodations for the night.
