Where does conservation start?

Where does conservation start? Folks, it has been a busy summer! I’ve had lots of visitor here at The Swamp and I wanted to be available to greet each and every one of you, but I’ve still had a bit of time to read up on what has been happening in the world of citizen conservation. I’ve been thinking a lot about the different approaches people are starting to explore when it comes to making the world a better place.

Impacts of Illegal Hunting

Last month I featured a blog written by a zoo intern. These folks are smart and eager to share what they’ve learned during their internships with the world! So, this blog comes to you from Max about the impacts of bushmeat.

Ocean Poems

June is World Oceans Month. I’ve talked a lot about how important oceans are to life on Earth. But there are many out there who have been inspired to write about and praise the ocean. So that you may also be inspired by the ocean in a different way, this year’s World Oceans Month blog is a small collection of poems and quotes about the deep blue. Enjoy!

Be Prepared for Pets!

One of our zoo interns, Natalie, has been learning a whole lot about different ways to care for animals. She is so passionate about it, she wrote a blog to help aspiring pet owners get started. Let’s see what Natalie has to say about pet ownership…

Nature Does It Best

Chicago got a lotta rain this week. I’m sure many of you were gnawing your fingernails as you watched the storms pass through, hoping your basements would stay dry. Unfortunately, this is probably our new normal. As Chicagoans adjust to record-setting precipitation year after year you had best be prepared to do something more than build big tunnels.

Is it endangered?

“Is it endangered?” This is a common question I hear from guests visiting Brookfield Zoo. When the question is asked in reference to me, the answer is no – I am critically endangered.

Of Crocodiles and Conservation

Hello friends, happy Earth Day! There are a lot of ways we can take care of the Earth, and you know I’m passionate about three of them: fighting climate change, protecting water and the ocean, and making seafood sustainable. I’ve posted many a’blog on these topics. But you may be wondering what they have to do with each other, and with a crocodile? Well, let me explain…

National Zoo Lover's Day

Have you seen this man? His name is Tom and he is at Brookfield Zoo A LOT. It’s National Zoo Lover’s Day, so today I salute Tom Jacobsen – a true Brookfield Zoo Lover. You can find Tom at the zoo two to three days a week every week. He goes to almost all the Dolphins in Action presentations on those days. Between shows he meanders around the park, except when he has errands to run.

The Hardest Working Nutritionist in Town

I have my own nutritionist. Well, ok…I guess I share her with all the other animals at the zoo, but still, I have my own nutritionist. Why am I telling you this? Because March 14 is National Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day and even I, as a crocodile, benefit from having a nutritionist. So today, I want to give a shout out to Dr. Jennifer Watts, Director of Nutrition at Brookfield Zoo.

Souvenirs for a Cause at Brookfield Zoo

Souvenirs: Who doesn’t love that little memento to commemorate a special day, visit, or occasion? Some souvenirs are iconic – think Mold-A-Rama, mouse ears, or the ever-popular shot glass. Some souvenirs do more than represent a memory of a good time. Some souvenirs, like many at Brookfield Zoo, can make the world a better place.
