Kecil's Public Debut

Maggie and Kecil Orangutan

It’s time for a visit!
The big day is finally here. Kecil has been acclimating to the expansive habitat space in Tropic World Asia for the past two weeks and he will make his debut to all of you this Saturday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to noon!
On his first day out he was wide eyed and a bit amazed.  He stayed close to Maggie and whimpered if she moved too far away.  We saw many joyful reunions those first few days as they separated and found one another again.  Maggie learned to move more slowly to wait for Kecil, and he in turn learned to follow her more closely.

Kecil orangutan makes his public debut at Brookfield Zoo

Kecil is now in exploring mode, climbing the many vines available to see where they lead, and shaking them when our free flight birds land on them to watch them fly away.  He has peered down from a vine to see the otter family in the river below.  He seems to know now where Maggie probably is when they get separated and he goes on his own to find her. These are all positive behaviors that show us he is acclimating well.
Our plan is to have Maggie and Kecil out in Tropic World Asia during weekends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.  He usually naps in the afternoons, so we will be giving our other orangutans a chance to explore the habitat then. Check our website for additional times before you visit which may change as he grows.

Thank you for showing an interest in this amazing little orangutan and for following his story through our blog.  This will be our last blog entry, at least for a while ☺.

NOTE: Maggie and Kecil may not always be on exhibit due to animal care needs.
