Chicago Zoological Society to Honor Martin Luther King Jr. with Choral Celebration
Free Admission to Brookfield Zoo on January 20—Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Brookfield, Ill.—Join Chicago Zoological Society staff for a choral celebration in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 20. In honor of the day, zoo admission will be free (a parking fee will still apply).
At noon, guests are welcome to stop by the zoo’s Discovery Center for performances by members of Mt. Carmel Parish of Darien, Eclectic from John F. Kennedy High School in Chicago, Chicago Metamorphosis Orchestra Project, and Eisenhower High School Show Choir in Chicago. In between each performance, guests will be able to watch portions of Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, which he delivered on August 28, 1963. On that historic day, Dr. King, one of the most prominent leaders of the civil rights movement, shared his dream with a large crowd in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.
Afterwards, youngsters will be invited to share their wishes and decorate silhouettes in the shape of peace doves. The paper figures will be hung on branches and displayed in the Hamill Family Play Zoo for guests to see.
This event is hosted by staff members of the Society’s Arcoiris group, whose mission is to achieve organizational excellence through diversity.
