Animals at Brookfield Zoo Receive Patriotic-themed Enrichment
Celebrate the 4th of July Weekend at Brookfield Zoo

Brookfield, Ill. — In celebration of the upcoming 4th of July weekend, animal care specialists at Brookfield Zoo created red, white, and blue enrichment for several of the animals to experience and enjoy.

The bottlenose dolphins received a floating flag made of sugar-free gelatin. Josie and Owen, two of the zoo’s California sea lions, as well as grey seals, Georgie, Celia and Kiinaq, seemed to enjoy their patriotic “Happy 4th of July” ice and sugar-free gelatin cakes. Additionally, 27-year old brown bears—Axhi and Jim—were presented with red, white, and blue-colored ice blocks filled with carrots, sweet potatoes, bones, apples, and blueberries. And, the zoo’s North American river otters’ ice blocks had fresh water smelt frozen inside.

On July 2-4, the Dolphins in Action presentation (an additional fee applies) will feature patriotic-themed music to get guests in the July 4th spirit. Presentations on those days are at 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.
