African Painted Dog Puppy Naming Contest

Seven African painted dog puppies were born at Brookfield Zoo on January 13. We've watched them grow up from weeks-old puppies to two-month-old puppies to receiving their neonatal exams. We also got the chance to know them better and see how they interact with the rest of the pack during a Bringing The Zoo To You chat.

During the chat, we learned that the African painted dog puppies included two females and five males. The females are named Roanne and Daisie while the males are named Cesar, JP, Masikio, and Prospect. You might notice that one male puppy wasn't included and that's because he doesn't have a name yet.

That's where you come in! We're looking for a little help in naming this African painted dog pup. Brookfield Zoo's animal care staff has put together a collection of five potential names to choose from:

· Kashyyyk - (Pronounced ‘Ka-sheek’), a planet in the Star Wars universe.
· Kwanza  - Means "first" in Swahili, as he was the first-born of this litter.
· Shaki - Means "shark" in Chewa, a Bantu language in Zimbabwe.
· Taya - Means "jaws" in Swahili.

THE NAMING VOTE IS NOW CLOSED. CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO VOTED FOR THE WINNING NAME...

KASHYYYK!

We look forward to when you can come visit Kashyyyk and the rest of the pack at Brookfield Zoo when we reopen soon. In the meantime, if you'd like to support all of the African painted dogs at Brookfield Zoo, consider adopting them! Your donation helps to provide expert care for these special animals for one year. Depending on your level of commitment, your donation also entitles you to a personalized certificate of adoption, a color photograph of the painted dogs, a window decal, and more.
