Population dynamics

Population dynamics

Population dynamics is investigated in the three species of resident sea birds: the cormorant or guanay (Phalacocorax bougainvillii), the Peruvian pelican (Pelecanus thagus) and the Peruvian booby (Sula variegata).

The aim of this research is to understand the intra and inter-annual variation of resident populations of sea birds that inhabit the Punta San Juan reserve.

Through direct observation and use of scaled satellite maps, Agrorural staff estimates the number of sea birds at a weekly basis throughout the year, and more intensely (on a daily basis) during the breeding season. This is achieved using a different density estimate for breeding and non-breeding periods.

This information is shared with the PSJ Program and allows us to understand the long-term population trends, as well as the inter-annual and intra-annual variation of resident populations of seabirds. Having this understanding allows the PSJ Program to help in case there is need to make a rapid response in when there is anomalous trend in the population.
