Population genetics

Population genetics

Population genetics research is based on the entire population of the Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) at Punta San Juan reserve.

Through this research, we are assessing genetic relationships among individuals in the reserve and other Peruvian populations, as well as comparing with other South American populations.

To accomplish this, we have collected and preserved whole blood samples for extraction, amplification and sequencing of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA.

This information will determine if there are singularities in the genetic structure of Humboldt penguins at Punta San Juan in comparison with other colonies in Peru and Chile.
