Every day is Earth Day at Brookfield Zoo but on this very special day we'll be showcasing some of the steps you can take that will truly make a difference for animals across the globe! With special Zoo Chats as well as green activities & crafts, Party for the Planet will be filled with educational, engaging, and fun activities for the entire family!

Zoo Chats

10:30 a.m. - Animal Ambassador Chat - Location TBD

11:00 a.m. – Kangaroo Chat at the Kangaroo Yard Overlook near Australia House
11:00 a.m. - Big Cats Chat
11:30 a.m. - Bear Chat at the Great Bear Wilderness Exhibit Training Panel
12:15 p.m. - Pinniped (Sea Lion/Seals) Chat at Pinniped Point
1:30 p.m. - Animal Ambassador Chat - Location TBD
1:30 p.m. - Rhino Chat at Pachyderm House

Green Activities & Crafts

10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. - Oak Sapling, acorns, and milkweed giveaway (while supplies last) at Hamill Family Play Zoo.
10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. - Craft inside Hamill Family Play Zoo.
11:00 a.m. - Tree planting on the South Mall near The Swamp.

Recycle Collection Event

Brookfield Zoo will be accepting certain items for recycling on Earth Day. Bring your recyclable items to the North Lot anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. See below for acceptable and unacceptable items.

ELECTRONICS (Batteries should be removed)


Acceptable items include desktop computers, laptops, servers, holiday string lights, wires, cables, adapters, power supplies, cell phones, modems, tablets, phones, docking stations, cable boxes, video game consoles, microwaves, small metal appliances (toasters, crock pots, etc.), metal fans, iPods, MP3 players, iPads, handheld gaming systems, chargers, converter boxes, satellite receivers, VCRs, DVD players, keyboards, mice, radios, vacuum cleaners, plastic appliances, plastic fans, flat-screen monitors.

Unacceptable items include printers, scanners, batteries, wooden speakers, smoke detectors, lightbulbs, refrigerators, dehumidifiers, AC units, vacuum cleaners, power tools, bags, plastic containers, and ALL TVs. 



Acceptable items include blouses, pants, swimsuits, sweaters, socks, coats, shirts, undergarments, dresses, tuxedos, children's clothing, paired shoes and boots, ties, hats, gloves, scarves, purses, tote bags, backpacks, belts, plush toys, stuffed animals, bedding (sheets, comforters, pillowcases), quilts, curtains, towels, drapes. 

Unacceptable items include pillows, rugs, sleeping bags, carpet, foam mats, mattresses, cushions, vinyl shower curtains, ice/roller skates, single shoes, extremely damaged or broken shoes, plastic and wooden toys, dolls, luggage, wet or smelly items, kitchen supplies, furniture (including foam furniture), office supplies, tools, household items/appliances, paper, games, books, strollers, metal/glass/plastic items, dishes, lamps, blinds, wrapping paper, puzzles, car seats, fabric scraps. 



Acceptable items include any books in good condition. This includes fiction, nonfiction, craft books, cookbooks, children’s books, and more. We also accept LPs, CDs, and DVDs in good playable condition.

Free Admission for Military Personnel

To show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the men and women in the United States Armed Forces, the Chicago Zoological Society is offering free admission to Brookfield Zoo to all active, reservist, and retired members of the military. Qualified personnel who present a valid ID at one of the zoo's admission booths will be admitted free of charge.
