Community Partners

Everyone knows that Brookfield Zoo is situated in the middle of two beautiful communities: Brookfield and Riverside, Illinois.  We are dedicated to working with the surrounding communities as educators, horticulturists, and artists to foster a greater appreciation for nature, literacy, and conservation initiatives.  This summer we, once again, had the pleasure of partnering with Riverside’s Frederick Law Olmsted Society to hold a public poetry reading and ceremony for their winners of the 2017 Reflections on Riverside poetry contest.

This spring students in 1st – 8th grade were asked to write a poem about the natural beauty found in Riverside.  Students wrote about flowers, trees, pollinators, rivers and other natural beauty they found in their back yard.  $50 was awarded to the 1st place Junior High winner (grades 6-8) and $25 was awarded to the 1st place winner at each grade level 1-5, but for the students the joy wasn’t just in the prize money. On June 24th, Brookfield Zoo opened its gates to all of the participants and their families and held a poetry reading where the students could proudly read their poems to friends, family, and zoo visitors.  They were proudly awarded Certificates of Achievement and given a pot of gold, marigolds that is, for their hard work and dedication to nature and the arts.

Olmsted Society members are guided by Olmsted’s concern for humanity, nature, sense of community, and the innovative and thoughtful essence of his work. The Olmsted Society invites residents and visitors to join them in learning, protecting the environment, and preserving of their cultural and physical heritage. A natural partnership with Chicago Zoological Society formed because both organizations are dedicated to preserving native and natural habitats along with fostering a future generation of conservation leaders. This year’s winners are the future of conservation for their communities, whether they stay in Riverside or move far away, and everyone at Brookfield Zoo is proud to be a part of their journey.
