I hear this time of year, many of you are skipping red and white meat and substituting it with fish. You know who else eats fish? ME! I love fish! My people originate from the Orinoco River in Venezuela where a large part of our diet is fish! Eating fish is a great, low-fat way to get protein, along with other healthy nutrients for brain and body.
If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I’m pretty passionate about sustainable seafood. Naturally, it is in my own interest to compel others to choose seafood that has been harvested or farmed in a way that will leave plenty behind for my kin and neighbors, who also rely on seafood. But sustainable seafood is also important to the health of our oceans, lakes, and rivers, and believe it or not, affects you too!
You see, sustainable seafood isn’t about limiting seafood choices. Organizations like Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch© and Marine Stewardship Council assess fishing and farming practices so that you can make a choice that is healthiest for the environment and your family. Lemme break it down…
Whether it’s wild-caught or farmed/aquaculture seafood, the goal of sustainable seafood is to be sure that during fishing or farming, the ecosystem isn’t harmed and populations of fish aren’t depleted. In addition to looking at how fishing or farming practices affect seafood populations and the environment, sustainable seafood programs assess how healthy different varieties of fish are for humans to eat. For example, many varieties of seafood have high mercury content and that is no bueno for the ol’ thinker. Other fish may have high levels of other toxins so it may be recommended to avoid them for a while. Now, I bet you’re asking yourself, how do those toxins get there? I’ll give you a hint…humans.
So how do you choose sustainable seafood for the remaining Fridays in Lent and beyond? Here are some steps:

Ask restaurants and seafood counters at your grocery store: “Is your seafood sustainable?” When businesses hear their customers voicing concern, they will listen & act!
