Certified Veterinary technicians (CVT’s) are essential and critical to the day-to-day function of veterinary practices. National Veterinary Technician Week, first celebrated in 1993, takes place in the third week of October each year, and provides an opportunity to recognize the many contributions made by veterinary technicians.

Celebrate World Okapi Day 2019 at Brookfield Zoo

If you've ever seen an okapi, you know they're a very special animal. However, their existance remains threatened by slash-and-burn agriculture, illegal gold mining, and bushmeat poaching, despite having protected status since 1933. One way you can help okapi is by cutting down on coltan, a mineral used in electronic devices, and Brookfield Zoo has a way for you to do that.

When answering the question of Brookfield Zoo’s age, one may be inclined to look at the zoo’s opening date of July I, 1934. But it all depends on how you look at it. Is Brookfield Zoo 85 years old or is it more accurate to say Brookfield Zoo has been open to the public for 85 years?

Orphaned California Sea Lions Have a Forever Home at Brookfield Zoo

In 2018, two California sea lions were found stranded in different spots along the Pacific Coast. That started both of these orphans on a journey that has led to their recent arrival at Brookfield Zoo where they've finally found a forever home. Carolyn and Sabiena are expected to make their debut to zoo guests at Pinniped Point in mid-October.

Expanding Chicago Zoological Society's Welfare Monitoring Toolkit

Chicago Zoological Society's Animal Welfare Research Team's main goals is to identify new methods for continuously improving the welfare of individual animals. That's why they're focused on tracking physiological biomarkers, such as the glucocorticoid:DHEA ratio, to provide insight into an animal’s physical, mental and emotional health. Our Endocrinology Lab has already tracked glucocorticoid metabolites for over 50 species.

Behavioral Monitoring of the Endangered White-Bellied Pangolin

When people think of illegally trafficked animals, most do not think or have never heard of the world’s most trafficked mammal, the pangolin. Over the last several months, animal care staff and the animal welfare research staff have taken additional steps to learn more about the behavior of the pangolins in our care at Brookfield Zoo.

Have You Met Charger the California Sea Lion Pup?

On June 10, nine-year-old California sea lion Josephine ("Josie" to her friends) gave birth to a male pup named Charger. After giving them some time to bond behind the scenes, both mom and pup can be seen swimming and playing at Pinniped Point in Brookfield Zoo.
