ZARD: ZOO & AQUARIUM RADIOLOGY DATABASE

Welcome!

The Zoo and Aquarium Radiology Database (ZARD), housed at Brookfield Zoo Chicago, is a collaborative effort between multiple zoological institutions to provide an innovative and centralized online reference tool. Across taxa, leading institutions contributed thousands of digital radiographs and CT scans pre-approved by board-certified radiologists as ‘normal’ for each species. Veterinarians and related professionals engaged in zoo, wildlife, and aquatic medicine or other life sciences will benefit from this resource when used to overcome diagnostic challenges that augment caring for non-domestic species. The ZARD will be easily accessible through a cloud-interface, and training sessions will be provided near the launch date.

Project update

  • This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (MG-249218-OMS-21).

Diagnostic imaging from 500+ species and the seven leadership partners are being screened for normality.

RADIOLOGIST RECRUITMENT

We are actively recruiting volunteer board-certified veterinary radiologists to read studies for the database! The ZARD utilizes a familiar PACS interface to store and organize studies. Radiographs and CT scans have already been screened for technique, positioning, and obvious abnormalities. Radiologists are asked to choose species based on their comfort level and confirm study normality. Designed to be quick and efficient, each report consists of checkboxes where a body system is evaluated as normal, abnormal, or not applicable/not included. Email us to volunteer - we look forward to working with you!
